La Moresca antica was formed in 1989 to explore the rich repertoire of Italian Renaissance music. The music has its origins in traditional customs and the oral repertoire which itself was inspired by the music of the Renaissance and late Middle Ages.

In 2000 the band starts to be interested in the immense and completely unknown repertoire of Italian music from seafaring tradition, which includes shanties and sea songs dating from xii century to nowadays. As a result of this extensive research work, the band records their CD Marinaresca, recently reprinted. The band falls in love with this music, which became their main interests since then.

In 2004 the record their second Cd Li turchi alla marina, a collection of songs referring to the raids of Barbaresque pirates on Italian shores during past centuries.
